About Joanie Schaffner

I have over twenty-five years of experience treating adults with a range of concerns. People often seek help for personal growth issues including self-esteem, depression, anxiety, and relationships. I also offer treatment to reduce distress, helping people cope more effectively with specific circumstances.

I use an eclectic approach (psychodynamic, interpersonal and practical) that emphasizes the importance of the therapeutic relationship to bring about change.  I am an active participant in the treatment and am continually impressed by people’s capacity to grow, no matter what their age or circumstances.

While I specialize in treating adults, my earlier background as a child and family therapist enhances my understanding of parenting and family dynamics. Having also worked and trained the the field of adoption, I am especially familiar with issues that arise from that experience.

My other area of expertise is in career development, and I work with individuals to resolve these concerns in the context of psychotherapy or career counseling. I have worked as a trainer and management consultant in a wide range of sectors including manufacturing, finance, education, government, and health care.

I have a BA in English Literature from Kenyon College, a Masters in Clinical Social Work from Boston University, and a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Consultation and Development from The Boston Institute of Psychotherapy.
